Knoxville-based clothing retailer Goody's Family Clothing on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying it will close 69 stores as well as a distribution center in Arkansas. Goody's operates several stores in the Atlanta area and has a total of 355 retail branches in 20 U.S. states.

The company has not yet specified which stores it will close, or exactly how many of its approximately 12,000 employees will be out of work as a result of the bankruptcy. It was founded as an outlet store in Athens, Tenn., in 1953.
