Rockefeller Group Development Corp. has purchased 113 acres in Lakeland, Fla., with plans to develop an industrial park on the site. RGDC plans to build an industrial park of over 1 million square feet on the site, targeting specifically large-scale tenants. The company intends to begin development on the site in early 2009.

The site of the proposed development is the former USA International Speedway in Lakeland, which is located between Tampa and Orlando. RGDC is marketing the property as an opportunity for businesses to connect to the 8.5 million people in the area surrounding the business park. The site has convenient access to major international airports in both Tampa and Orlando, several highways and Florida’s burgeoning ports. Additionally, the site is close to the CSX Intermodal Center, a 5 million-square-foot integrated logistics center in neighboring Winter Haven.

RGDC sees Central Florida as a market on the rise. “Central Florida is quickly becoming a prime distribution center for the state, replacing traditional regional distribution hubs such as Atlanta,” Edgar Jones, vice president & regional development officer, Florida, for RGDC, said in a release. Additionally, the company believes that the growth will be sustained in the future. “We are confident in the long-term potential of Central Florida and will continue looking for other development opportunities in the area,” Jones further noted.

With RGDC’s new development in Florida, the firm will seek to replicate the success it has enjoyed with its portfolios of industrial facilities in New Jersey and California. The firm is based in Manhattan and owns, develops and managers commercial real estate properties, including corporate headquarters, multi-use urban complexes and distribution facilities. RGDC recently secured a government contract through the United State Department of Veteran Affairs to build a community outpatient clinic in Oceanside, Calif.
